Renault Twingo E-Tech returns as a sub-€20,000 EV, sales start 2026
Renault unveils the Twingo E-Tech, a sub-€20,000 electric city car with CATL LFP battery, Slovenian production and 2026 sales. Nissan and Dacia variants planned.
Renault has officially unveiled a new electric take on its cult city car, the Twingo. The 1990s icon returns as a modern EV with a price tag under €20,000. Production is slated for Slovenia, with sales due to start in early 2026.
The new Renault Twingo E-Tech keeps the signature silhouette and round headlights of the 1992 original. It’s part of the brand’s push to revive its classics, following the Renault 5 and Renault 4. Development took just two years, led by the French team together with engineers at the ACDC research center in Shanghai—an unusually brisk pace that hints at focused priorities.

The car uses a cost-effective and reliable LFP battery from China’s CATL, helping to drive down manufacturing costs. Only four body colors will be offered. The same platform will also underpin versions for partner brands: Nissan will introduce its own variant, and Dacia plans a budget model priced below €18,000.
Since 1993, Renault has sold more than 4.1 million Twingos across 25 countries. The electric Twingo aims to breathe life back into the shrinking small-city-car segment, squeezed by thin margins. If anything can rekindle interest, it’s a familiar name with a sensible price and a cleaner powertrain—no surprise that its comeback could become the standout moment on Europe’s EV scene in 2026.
