Ford Fiesta ST: hot hatch could come back as an EV on the RG EV Small platform

Ford Fiesta ST Could Return as Hot Electric Hatch ford.com

Ford hasn't ruled out a Fiesta ST or RS revival. The new 2028 Fiesta will sit on the same RG EV Small platform as the Alpine A290 — and even an AWD setup is on the table.

Ford may bring back the sporty Fiesta ST alongside the next-generation model. Auto Express reports that the company has confirmed performance versions of its future cars remain part of the plan — without them, the brand would struggle to keep its driver-focused image.

Christian Weingartner, Ford’s European general head of product, said no decisions have been made on ST or RS badges yet. But according to him, if the brand talks about a “race-to-road” philosophy, the line-up needs “really capable” versions. In other words, a hot Fiesta hasn’t been officially confirmed, but the idea of performance Fords stays on the table.

The new Fiesta has the hardware to back it up. The model is due in 2028 and will go fully electric. It will be built on the RG EV Small platform, already shared with the Renault 5, Alpine A290 and Nissan Micra. Auto Express notes that this architecture allows for a wider track, a lower stance, a multi-link rear suspension and even a second electric motor. In theory, that opens the door not only to a Fiesta ST, but also to an all-wheel-drive Fiesta RS.

After the Fiesta and Focus ST were discontinued, it looked like the era of small, fast Fords was over. Now the company is signalling the opposite: even in electric form, the small Fiesta should stay more than just a city car — a Ford with character.
