Toyota is developing a modular 4.0L twin-turbo V8 hybrid for 2026 models, with up to 900 hp and lower emissions for Lexus, Land Cruiser and performance cars.

Toyota is lining up a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 for series production. Takashi Uehara, who leads the company’s powertrain division, indicated it is being developed for more than just halo cars and could suit regular models too.

The engine is built on a modular architecture similar to the new 2.0-liter unit used in the GR Yaris M prototype. This shared approach should make it easier to slot the V8 into a wide range of vehicles, including SUVs such as the Land Cruiser LC300, streamlining integration without reinventing the hardware each time.

According to GoAuto, the unit is essentially a pairing of two 2.0-liter engines and may also be produced as a diesel with a hybrid system. Toyota is considering applications across Lexus and Century models.

The hybridized V8 is expected to deliver up to 900 hp while complying with stringent emissions standards. The first applications are likely to arrive on 2026 cars, including the Lexus Sport Coupe and Toyota GR GT, positioned as the company’s powertrain flagships. For enthusiasts, that mix of modularity, electrification, and a classic cylinder count looks like a pragmatic way to keep performance alive in a tightening regulatory era.
