Rivian confirms cold-weather AC charging bug on R1S and R1T

Owners of refreshed Rivian R1S and R1T report AC Level 2 charging fails in freezing temps, while DC fast works. Rivian admits a bug and promises a 2025.46 fix.
Owners of the refreshed Rivian R1S and R1T have run into an unexpected snag: in freezing weather, the trucks refuse to take a charge from home AC chargers. DC fast charging, however, keeps working without complaint, which makes the glitch feel even more perplexing.
Rivian has acknowledged the issue and says a fix will arrive in an upcoming software update. The problem surfaced most clearly as cold weather settled over northern states. Drivers report leaving the vehicle on an overnight top-up only to find it drained by morning. Even battery preconditioning doesn’t always rescue the situation.
First-generation models are unaffected, while among Gen 2 vehicles the problem shows up across different battery chemistries, which rules out the cell type as the culprit.
Some owners have noticed a pattern: when the battery temperature drops below minus one degree Celsius, Level 2 charging simply won’t start. Warming it to zero doesn’t change the outcome, but by around 10 degrees Celsius the process suddenly returns to normal.
For now, Rivian advises forcing battery conditioning; if that doesn’t work, try a soft system reboot or rely on DC fast charging. The company promises a remedy in software version 2025.46.
