Geely announces the Galaxy Cruiser SUV for Western Europe, featuring hybrid powertrain, advanced off-road tech, and design similar to Land Rover Defender. Launch expected from 2026.

Geely has officially announced plans to launch its new Galaxy Cruiser SUV in Western European markets. While currently presented as a concept, the timeline and geography for its rollout have already been partially confirmed.

Design and Similarity to Land Rover Defender

The Galaxy Cruiser's design is difficult to view as truly original. Its circular headlights, hood shape, straight body lines, squared-off wheel arches, and overall proportions all strongly evoke the Land Rover Defender.

Differences are limited to details like the rear lighting and some decorative elements. This clear visual link to the British icon could pose a reputational risk for the brand in Europe.

Interior and Chassis Technology

Inside, the Galaxy Cruiser appears far more distinctive. The concept features a digital instrument cluster, a large central screen, and a substantial center console with separate controls for off-road modes. Geely's main focus is on electronic chassis management: a system that controls suspension, braking, and steering in real time to minimize wheel lift and improve off-road capability. It claims a wading depth of up to 800 mm, using cameras and sensors to analyze underwater conditions.

Powertrain and Market Launch Plans

The Galaxy Cruiser is built on the SEA-R platform, also used by the Zeekr 9X and some Lotus hybrid models. The SUV will get a hybrid powertrain with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and at least two electric motors, providing electric all-wheel drive.

A battery with up to 70 kWh of capacity is expected to deliver up to 350 km of range on the Chinese test cycle. The model is slated to launch in China by the end of 2026, followed by the UK in 2027, with possible expansion to other European markets thereafter.

Overall, the Geely Galaxy Cruiser represents an attempt to enter the European SUV segment by blending a familiar look with advanced technology. In practice, however, its striking resemblance to the Land Rover Defender could work against it, especially in a market where design and originality remain crucial.
