Peugeot GTi: a hybrid is on the table, the second hot hatch is not

Alain Favey says the brand has not found the mix of performance and price for another GTi. The E-208 GTi stays the only confirmed car, from £34,995, with first British deliveries in early 2027.
Peugeot is not slamming the door on a hybrid GTi, but it is not promising one either. The option is being considered; what the brand has not found is the combination of performance and price that would make a proper hot hatch. Crossovers are out of the story altogether: at Peugeot the GTi badge belongs to hatchbacks only.
The only confirmed car wearing it is the E-208 GTi. In the UK it costs £34,995, or roughly $47,200, produces 281 hp and 345 Nm, reaches 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and covers up to 375 km on the WLTP cycle (on optional Hankook tyres; 352 km on the standard Michelin Pilot Sport 4S). The first British deliveries begin in early 2027.
Between the wish and the production plan there is still a gap. In May, Peugeot boss Alain Favey said that a return of the 308 GTi “makes a lot of sense”. In an interview on 5 August he was far more specific: “I would love to, but as things stand today the answer is no. We have not found a solution so far, but we will keep trying.” He was answering a question about the chances of another GTi appearing among the seven new models planned for Europe by 2030.
A pure petrol GTi is ruled out by the French emissions tax: the malus écologique hits any car emitting more than 108 g/km of CO2, and a turbocharged hot hatch does not slip under that threshold. A hybrid could — but it brings extra weight and cost with it, exactly the two parameters that matter most in a compact car of this kind.
