Kia e-Niro recall: 14,117 electric cars called in for a BMS update and battery check

The main part of the Kia e-Niro recall takes about 30 minutes, but the job may not end with a software flash. The dealer has to inspect the high-voltage battery, and if damage is found the entire pack is replaced free of charge. That work takes up to six hours.
The campaign covers 14,117 electric crossovers built between 19 May 2020 and 18 March 2022. Europe accounts for 11,331 of them, with 1791 registered in Germany. This is the first-generation e-Niro: the recall window closes on 18 March 2022, so second-generation Niro EV cars fall outside it.
The cause sits in the logic of the battery management system. The BMS tracks the condition and voltage of individual cells, but under certain operating conditions that monitoring is limited and a fault inside the pack may not be spotted in time. Cells can then overheat and the fire risk rises — and it can happen while the car is parked or charging. Kia will update the software first and then assess the actual state of the battery.
Similar campaigns have already run at parent company Hyundai, covering the electric Kona and Ioniq, which like the e-Niro were built in Korea. Published KBA and Safety Gate documents list no fires, injuries or property damage, which does not make the inspection pointless: new software improves battery monitoring, yet it cannot undo damage that has already occurred. Hence the second half of the job, checking the pack after the update.
32CARS.RU has already covered a separate Kia EV6 and EV9 recall caused by defective battery cells. For an e-Niro owner, the total number of recalled cars matters less than whether the build date falls inside the window and whether an open campaign is attached to a specific VIN.
Campaign details: the recall was published in the KBA database on 24 July 2026 and is tracked under reference number 16831R, while the manufacturer’s internal code is 261261. The notification in the European Safety Gate rapid alert system is dated 31 July. Owners of affected cars are being contacted by letter, and a VIN can be checked with a dealer or in the KBA recall database. The prescribed work is a battery management software update and, if necessary, free replacement of the battery pack.
