Toyota launches the Aygo X Hybrid in Europe: 116 hp, 85 g/km CO2, GA-B platform, upgraded tech and style. A compact crossover many in Japan also want.

Toyota has begun sales of the refreshed Aygo X compact crossover in Europe, making it the brand’s first A-segment model with a full hybrid powertrain. The newcomer has quickly caught attention not only across Europe but also among car fans in Japan — and it’s easy to see why.

What makes the new Aygo X stand out

The headline change is the switch from the previous 1.0-liter gasoline engine to the hybrid system from the Yaris and Yaris Cross. The 1.5-liter setup delivers 116 hp, up 44 hp on the outgoing version. CO2 emissions are just 85 g/km, placing the Aygo X among the cleanest cars in its class.

Design and tech

The Aygo X keeps its compact-crossover stance but adopts a completely reworked front end with Toyota’s signature double trapezoid. Chunky black-clad arches, wheels up to 18 inches, and vivid Mellow Spice hues sharpen the look. Inside, there’s a 7-inch digital cluster, an electromechanical parking brake, USB-C, optional wireless charging, and a JBL audio system. The choices feel well judged for a small car that still wants to feel grown-up.

Why many want it in Japan

Built on the GA-B platform, the Aygo X packages its hybrid system neatly, without compromising trunk space or room for passengers. With the Toyota Passo gone, many in Japan view the Aygo X as an ideal replacement for a city hatchback with an efficient hybrid.

Toyota has essentially created a compact hybrid tailor-made for dense Japanese cities, yet it is selling it only in Europe. Social media reactions suggest the Aygo X has real potential on the brand’s home turf; the remaining question is whether Toyota will choose to bring it there. Given its footprint and efficiency, the case seems strong.
