Tesla's Cybercab prototype was spotted in its first public-road tests, likely running autonomous software. Series production is slated for Q2 next year.

The Tesla Cybercab has been spotted undergoing public-road testing for the first time. The development prototype appeared just minutes from Tesla’s engineering center in Los Altos, California.

The Cybercab carried a rearview mirror and conventional side mirrors, which is to be expected at this stage of development.

Tesla may have been running the prototype with software for fully autonomous driving during these on-road trials. That seems the most likely approach, especially given the plan for the vehicle to rely entirely on autonomy to shuttle one or two passengers to their destination.

The Tesla Cybercab has yet to complete all phases of testing, and the company plans to begin series production in the second quarter of next year. The timeline points to a brisk march toward the assembly line, assuming validation proceeds as planned.
