Discover the VW Classic Polo by Hart Design at Tokyo Auto Salon 2026: a Golf II-inspired build with semi-dry carbon aero, tuned suspension and 17-inch wheels.

VW Classic Polo was one of the most talked-about premieres at Tokyo Auto Salon 2026. Hart Design reimagined the current Polo as a modern take on the Golf II, crafting a retro look with careful attention to detail and admirably thorough execution. The result feels like a considered remix of classic cues through today’s lens.

Design concept and key elements

The build features a signature Golf II-style grille, revised bumpers, and round 7-inch halogen headlights. Bolt-on-style fender extensions and a lip spoiler round out the styling. The aim was to capture the spirit of early Volkswagen hatchbacks, preserving Golf II proportions while tailoring them to the Polo’s footprint. Visually, the changes tighten the massing and deliver a confident, period-correct attitude.

Aerodynamics and materials

The aero package was produced by project partner MY Silhouette, which specializes in lightweight composites. At its core is semi-dry carbon: it is stronger than fiberglass and lighter than traditional carbon composites, while still allowing an ideal gelcoat finish. This approach gives the Polo both premium visual depth and high rigidity for the components, promising a richer look than basic FRP without tipping into show-car gloss.

Chassis and exterior additions

The car is fitted with either adjustable suspension or an air setup, along with exclusive 17-inch wheels that establish a classic hot-hatch stance. At the rear, roof and tailgate spoilers nudge the silhouette toward European rally machines of the 1980s. The stance and aero choices land on the tasteful side of nostalgia, stopping short of caricature.
