Volvo recalls 413,151 U.S. XC40s for rearview camera fix A. Krivonosov

Volvo Cars is recalling 413,151 U.S. XC40 models for a rearview camera software defect. Dealers and OTA updates will install a fix, restoring backup visuals.

Volvo Cars has announced a sweeping recall of 413,151 vehicles in the U.S. over a recurring rearview camera issue. NHTSA reports the defect stems from software that can cause the camera image to stop appearing.

The recall covers 2021–2025 XC40 models. It is the second such case, following a service campaign announced in May 2025. Volvo says the latest action is tied to an additional software error that produces the same symptom as before.

The company is preparing updated software that will be installed at no cost by dealers or delivered over the air in the coming weeks.

Despite the scale, Volvo emphasizes the issue is limited to software and does not affect other vehicle safety systems. Even so, a rearview camera is mandatory safety equipment in the U.S., which makes a failure like this grounds for an immediate recall. In everyday use, a blank backup feed is more than a minor annoyance, eroding confidence when maneuvering in tight spaces.

The next update phase is intended to close out both identified defects and restore normal parking visualization for all XC40 owners.
