BMW is recalling 36,922 2025–2026 X3 crossovers due to a steering software fault that may cause unintended wheel movement when stationary. Fix: free OTA update.

BMW is recalling nearly 37,000 X3 crossovers from the new model years after a disconcerting digital quirk surfaced in the steering system. A total of 36,922 vehicles from the 2025–2026 model years are included, and the company says the issue may be present across the entire batch.

The defect lands squarely in the uncanny corner of modern car tech: when the vehicle is stationary, the steering wheel can, in rare instances, swing from side to side without driver input.

According to documents filed with the U.S. regulator, the source is the steering-control software, which proved insufficiently robust in its diagnostics. If one of the two torque-sensor channels fails while the car is parked, during start-up, or when stopped in Drive, the software may not recognize the fault correctly. The result can be unintended steering-wheel movements.

The upside is that the remedy is comparatively straightforward: a steering-system software update. The primary plan is a free over-the-air install, so owners can avoid a dealer visit, though those who prefer can book a complimentary update at a dealership.

It is a telling episode: even advanced components designed to enhance comfort and precision can be exposed by rare but awkward software bugs. As more functions lean on electronics, it becomes crucial to scrutinize not just the hardware, but also the rigor of diagnostics, updates, and edge-case testing.
