Mitsubishi confirms the Pajero's comeback, previewing a ladder-frame 4WD SUV with DST-inspired design, diesel power and rugged gear, targeting a 2026 debut.

Mitsubishi has confirmed the return of one of its best-known nameplates — Pajero. For the first time since 2019, the Japanese automaker has openly stated it is developing a new generation of the SUV, revealing its front end in an official video aired on Japanese television. The model is intended for global markets and, according to rumors, could make its debut by the end of 2026.

The new Pajero leans on the brand’s off-road philosophy and will inherit key elements of the Mitsubishi DST concept unveiled in 2024. Standout exterior cues include inverted L-shaped LED headlights, a tall stance, serious underbody protection and an assertive profile. The look seems focused on function rather than ornament, which suits the brief.

It is expected to retain a traditional ladder frame, four-wheel drive and a solid rear axle—distinguishing it from the more road‑oriented Outlander with its unibody architecture.

The cabin remains under wraps, though sources suggest a noticeable step up in refinement compared with previous generations. The powertrain lineup will likely include diesel engines, while plug‑in hybrid electrification is expected to be left to other models. If so, that choice would underline the Pajero’s utilitarian remit.

Bringing the Pajero back is a bold nod to the brand’s roots. If Mitsubishi preserves the authentic off‑road character and adds competitive tech, the model could pose a serious challenge to the Toyota Land Cruiser and other heavyweights in the segment. The move feels like a return to form.
