Euro NCAP put two fresh arrivals to the test, and both earned the maximum five stars: the Mazda CX-5 crossover and the Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan.

In the results, Mazda scored 90% for adult occupant protection, 89% for child occupants, 93% for pedestrian protection, and 83% for safety-assist performance. The tested car was a CX-5 with a 2.5-liter engine and a mild-hybrid system. Experts also noted that, for pedestrians, the most problematic zones on the CX-5 remain the side pillars and the front edge of the hood.

The new CLA also secured five stars, with 94% for adults, 89% for children, 93% for pedestrians, and 85% for driver-assistance systems. Testing was carried out on the CLA 250 with a conventional internal-combustion engine, and the primary risk for pedestrians is again associated with the side pillars. Overall, the scores look convincing, and the repeated caution around the pillars hints at where manufacturers still face tough safety trade-offs.
