General Motors has issued a recall for 1,120 GMC Canyon pickups in the most off-road-focused AT4X specification with the American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) package. The campaign targets select 2024–2026 model-year trucks and is tied not to hardware but to a software fault: in a crash, the front passenger airbag may deploy with excessive force.
The root cause is an incorrect calibration in the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM). Regulatory documents indicate that this setting can trigger the inflator’s second stage in situations where only the first, gentler stage should fire. GM said it has not received reports of real-world incidents, yet the risk is plain: improper deployment increases the likelihood of injury. The danger is heightened for a child in the front passenger seat, even though that position is generally considered unsafe for children.
The recall covers vehicles built during a specific production window from August 2023 through October 2025 and applies only to versions with the AEV package. The remedy comes in two forms: a free SDM software update at dealerships, or an over-the-air update for connected trucks if the owner accepts the terms. Having both options is practical, and the OTA route is especially welcome for owners who actually take these trucks off the pavement.
On the assembly line, the correction began on November 5, 2025. Owner notifications about the available fix are planned to start on January 26, 2026. It’s a tidy reminder that today’s safety performance often hinges on calibration as much as components.
