Volkswagen confirms PowerCo’s first Spanish gigafactory: battery cell mass production from July 2027, 20–60 GWh capacity to supply CUPRA, Skoda and VW ID. EVs.

Volkswagen has confirmed the launch date for PowerCo’s first Spanish gigafactory near Valencia. Mass production of battery cells will start in July 2027, a year after the Electric Urban Car Family arrives with the CUPRA Raval, Skoda Epiq, Volkswagen ID. Polo and ID. Cross. Until then, the Landaben and Martorell plants in Spain will receive batteries from Germany, from the Salzgitter site.

Pilot production in Sagunto is scheduled for autumn 2026. In the initial phase, the facility will focus on a unified prismatic cell format—a pragmatic move to push costs down through scale. The plant is planned for 20 GWh of annual capacity, with potential expansion to 40 and even 60 GWh.

The new models are expected to offer two battery options: a 38 kWh LFP unit and a 56 kWh NCM pack. Electric hatchbacks are set to travel up to 450 km on the WLTP cycle, while crossovers should cover around 420 km—figures that land squarely in the everyday sweet spot.

The entire lineup will be assembled in Spain and Portugal, turning the Iberian Peninsula into a key hub for VW’s electric production and highlighting a clear shift toward tightly localized manufacturing.
