Sonderwunsch re-commission: Porsche Carrera GT reborn with 917 livery

Porsche revives a Carrera GT via its Sonderwunsch and Factory Re-Commission programs: a mechanical reset, 917-inspired livery, and a refreshed cabin inside.

Porsche runs a rare service that effectively resets a car’s life: the Sonderwunsch and Factory Re-Commission programs. The car is stripped to the last fastener, inspected and restored, and the result is presented as if you’re looking at a machine in near zero-mile condition. To mark the Carrera GT’s 20th anniversary, that’s exactly what the engineers did—mechanically, the supercar was brought as close as possible to the 2005 factory specification.

As journalists at SPEEDME.RU report, outwardly this is no longer the classic silver Carrera GT. The owner commissioned a livery inspired by the Porsche 917 that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970: a red-and-white scheme, the number 23, and contrasting details. Matte black carbon accents were added, along with dark grilles on the engine cover and black wheels. The body was immediately covered in protective film, because the project was conceived not for a podium but for real driving.

Inside, there are updates as well. The cabin was essentially rebuilt, with generous red Alcantara on the dashboard, doors, steering wheel, and center console. Certain elements were chosen to visually echo the 918 Spyder, and the front trunk follows the same theme with a matching luggage set. It’s easy to assume restorations like this are about value and status, yet here the intent to preserve a legend—and still not be afraid to drive it—comes through.

Porsche built 1,270 Carrera GTs, and each has long since become more than just a supercar. This particular car stands out for pairing a near-factory mechanical reset with the owner’s personal narrative that shows through in every detail.
