Vigilante 4x4 reimagines the 1979 Jeep Wagoneer with a 392 HEMI and shou sugi ban wood
Discover Vigilante 4x4’s all‑black 1979 Jeep Wagoneer restomod with a 392 HEMI SRT‑8, shou sugi ban wood, upgraded suspension and brakes, plus a retro cabin.
American outfit Vigilante 4x4 has unveiled a restomod based on the 1979 Jeep Wagoneer, preserving the classic SUV’s signature silhouette while layering in contemporary touches. The build goes all-in on black, with darkened trim and reimagined wood panels finished using the shou sugi ban technique. It rides on heavy-duty tires and is set up for active use; the monochrome treatment flatters the Wagoneer’s crisp lines, while the charred-wood accents add a crafted edge that feels intentional rather than nostalgic.
Power comes from a 392 HEMI SRT-8 gasoline engine. To meet modern expectations, the suspension, steering, and braking system were reworked, improving handling and safety without diluting the model’s authentic character. The calibration reads as well judged, aiming for confidence and control instead of theatrics.
Inside, the cabin is finished in warm tones with leather upholstery, dense carpets, and corduroy inserts in late-1970s style. The original window cranks remain, now operating power mechanisms. Conceived as a practical daily driver, the project also stands as an unconventional option in the family-car camp—a useful, distinctive alternative to the usual choices.
