Toyota debuts the Turbo Trail Cruiser at SEMA: a 60-series Land Cruiser restomod with a 3.4L twin-turbo V6, manual gearbox, 1.5-inch lift and 35-inch tires.
On the eve of SEMA, Toyota unveiled the Turbo Trail Cruiser concept—a classic Land Cruiser 60 reimagined with a modern turbocharged engine from the Tundra pickup. This restomod blends the rugged spirit of the 1980s icon with 21st-century hardware.
Under the hood sits a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 rated at 389 hp and 479 Nm—nearly twice what the original inline-six delivered. Crucially, Toyota kept a manual transmission, crafting a bespoke adapter plate to marry it with the contemporary engine.
Engineers developed new motor mounts, reworked the oil pan and cooling system, and fitted a unique exhaust. Sensibly, the body stays almost untouched: the same clean, boxy geometry, plenty of chrome, and that signature 1986 silver hue.
The truck rides on a 1.5-inch lift, 35-inch off-road tires, and an upgraded suspension with reverse shackles. Inside, changes are restrained: analog gauges and cloth upholstery remain, with just a discreet nod to today in the form of a touchscreen and a JBL audio system. The restraint suits the brief.
The Turbo Trail Cruiser remains a one-off, yet it neatly shows how heritage design and modern tech can coexist without diluting the Land Cruiser’s character. The result feels authentic rather than nostalgic for nostalgia’s sake.
