Volkswagen Japan details its Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 lineup: ID. GTI Concept Japan debut, Golf R Black Edition, and ID. Buzz LWB, with demos and giveaways.

Volkswagen Japan has announced it will appear at Tokyo Auto Salon 2026, running from January 9 to 11 at the Makuhari Messe exhibition complex. For the brand, it’s more than a booth presence; it’s a way to show how its storied ideas are moving into a reality where electrification is becoming the norm, even for emotion-led lineups.

The centerpiece will be the ID. GTI Concept, making its first appearance in Japan. Volkswagen highlights the symbolism: in the GTI’s 50th year, the concept is meant to demonstrate how the familiar formula of driving fun combined with everyday practicality can continue in the electric era. The company frames it not as a cold tech exercise, but as an effort to preserve the recognizable GTI character while weaving in sustainability and a contemporary design treatment. The message feels clear enough: the badge aims to stay true to itself without pretending the landscape hasn’t shifted.

Alongside the concept, the Golf R Black Edition will be shown as a special version of the Golf R with blacked-out details and specific equipment. Completing the display is the all-electric ID. Buzz in Pro Long Wheelbase form, carrying the spirit of the Type 2 bus into the realm of a modern family EV.

Visitors can expect on-stand activities: gifts for taking part in a survey, appearances by a certified Volkswagen Academy trainer, and materials outlining future plans for GTI and ID. Buzz.
