Porsche to build new M1 SUV in Leipzig with combustion and plug-in hybrid options, while Macan becomes EV-only. Series production planned for the late decade.

Porsche plans to expand output at its Leipzig plant by bringing a second SUV online. Internally dubbed M1, the model will be offered with a combustion engine or as a plug-in hybrid, Manager Magazin reported, citing decisions by the company’s executive board and supervisory board.

Series production is slated for the end of the decade. The newcomer will complement the site’s existing portfolio, which already builds the Macan. Going forward, Leipzig will assemble the Macan exclusively in electric form, while the M1 will run alongside it with alternative powertrains.

Porsche indicates the project reaffirms a strategy of advancing multiple propulsion solutions in parallel, and assigning it to Leipzig should strengthen the plant’s competitiveness and flexibility. The company has not disclosed investment figures, planned volumes, employment effects, or whether the factory will need infrastructure changes.

The move comes as the company discusses cost-saving measures. Even so, launching another SUV in Leipzig is framed as a long-term commitment to the plant within Porsche’s production network and a sign of the brand’s interest in the upper-end SUV segment in 2026 and beyond. It reads less like a detour and more like a deliberate two-track path: electric on the Macan, and electrified combustion on the M1.
