After an August fire, Tesla restarted battery pack assembly at Grünheide, now automated and using 4680 cells from Austin—hinting at Model Y updates in Europe.

Tesla has resumed battery pack assembly at its Grünheide facility near Berlin. After an August fire that damaged 512 battery cells, the site underwent upgrades and is back in operation. According to management, it now stands as Tesla’s most highly automated battery plant worldwide, a turnaround that signals how quickly the company moved to get the line humming again.

The plant previously built packs using LFP cells from CATL and NCM cells from LG Energy Solution for various Model Y versions. Now Grünheide is integrating Tesla’s own 4680-format cells shipped from the company’s Austin, Texas, factory. This suggests European Model Y variants could soon adopt the new battery, though Tesla has not specified which configurations. It’s a notable step toward broader use of the in-house cell format in Europe.
