Jaguar rejects rumors of Gerry McGovern's exit as design chief

Jaguar denies reports of ousting McGovern as design chief jaguar.co.uk

Jaguar denies reports that design chief Gerry McGovern was ousted, saying it’s unrelated to JLR leadership changes, and addresses backlash to Type 00 concept.

Jaguar has rejected reports that design chief Gerry McGovern has been pushed out. Several outlets had claimed the long-time JLR design leader lost his role after criticism of the brand’s rebrand and the Jaguar Type 00 concept. In responses to media inquiries, a company representative stated that talk of his dismissal was inaccurate.

The rumors surfaced soon after JLR CEO Adrian Mardell resigned, with P.B. Balaji—who previously held finance roles at Tata Motors—stepping in. Jaguar indicated the leadership change is not connected to staffing in the design division, and described claims about terminating McGovern’s contract as speculative. With a change at the very top, chatter was bound to grow, yet the brand’s line is clear: the two developments shouldn’t be conflated.

McGovern has worked with Jaguar and Land Rover for more than two decades and is credited with key models such as the Range Rover Evoque, the Velar, and the current Range Rover lineup. He also oversaw the Type 00 concept, which drew a negative public reaction. Despite the backlash, the company has not announced any adjustments to the design team and continues preparing future debuts. At times like this, steady design stewardship can act as a ballast, especially when a bold concept divides opinion.
