CUPRA Tavascan eyed for VW CEA architecture as EU rethinks China tariffs
EU may ease tariffs on China-built VWs; CUPRA Tavascan could adopt VW–XPeng’s CEA architecture, accelerating software updates by 30%, refreshing the MEB-based EV.
After the European Union began weighing the removal of Volkswagen’s China-built models from the list of cars subject to protective tariffs, one of the clearest potential beneficiaries—the all-electric CUPRA Tavascan—could be in line for a substantial update. The crossover is manufactured at Volkswagen’s Anhui plant and is, technically, a close relative of China’s Volkswagen ID. UNYX 06.
In China, the family has already added a sedan, the ID. UNYX 07, which adopts the new CEA electronic architecture developed by Volkswagen together with XPeng in 18 months. CEA reduces the number of control units, shortens the wiring, and accelerates software rollouts by roughly 30%, opening the door to software-defined vehicles.
Since the ID. UNYX 06 and the Tavascan share the MEB platform and differ mainly in design details, the architecture upgrade is expected to migrate to the European model as well. The timing would matter amid easing sales: the Tavascan’s early momentum was driven by discounts, while the 70,000-per-year target proved too optimistic.
