Volkswagen Group of America has announced a recall of a limited batch of 2023 and 2024 ID.4 crossovers due to a potential manufacturing defect in the high-voltage battery. The issue involves cells in which electrode alignment may have been off during production. If such a defect is present, the vehicle can lose range and some performance — a risk the industry tends to handle with particular caution.

Until inspections and repairs are completed, owners are advised to follow temporary safety measures: park the car outdoors right after charging, avoid leaving it on overnight charging indoors, skip Level 3 fast charging, and set the charge limit to 80%. At dealerships, the battery will be inspected and, if needed, the suspect module will be replaced at no cost to the owner. The guidance may feel conservative, yet it’s a sensible buffer while the cars await service.
