Toyota GR GT: an open-top Aero Top version may be on the way

The Toyota GR GT could gain an open-top Aero Top variant with a removable central roof panel. The report comes from Japan's Magazine X. There is no official confirmation of the project yet, so the future version cannot be treated as a confirmed production model.

According to the report, Toyota is weighing two design routes: a lightweight panel the driver removes by hand, or an electric mechanism. The manual version has less impact on weight and the centre of gravity, while the powered one is more convenient but would need extra actuators and body reinforcement.

Aero Top is not a full convertible. The longitudinal roof rails, pillars and rear body structure stay in place, with only the panel above the driver and passenger removed. Toyota used a similar layout on the Supra generations A70 and A80. It allows for an open cabin without the significant loss of rigidity seen on cars with a fully folding roof.

Magazine X also reports on a more powerful GR GT variant. Test cars spotted with a larger rear wing, canards and fender vents are seen as indirect evidence of its development.

Toyota itself has only officially confirmed the road-going GR GT and the racing GR GT3. The base car uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 paired with an electric motor and a rear-mounted eight-speed transmission. Target figures call for at least 650 hp and 850 Nm of torque, a kerb weight of no more than 1,750 kg, and a top speed above 320 km/h. Launch is expected around 2027.

Until Toyota makes an official statement, the Aero Top and GRMN names, the roof mechanism type, production numbers and launch timing all remain unconfirmed.
