New Smart #2: the two-seater returns with double the range and a familiar size

Smart #2 has shown its production design for the first time: a 35.7 kWh battery, around 300 km of WLTP range, fast charging under 20 minutes and an estimated price near €20,000.
The two-seat Smart is coming back, but the new electric car will echo the old Fortwo mainly in its size and manoeuvrability. Smart has shown the #2 on advertising murals without test camouflage for the first time: the car keeps a short bonnet, wheels pushed to the corners, minimal overhangs and a separate Tridion safety cell.
It’s the technical side that sets the newcomer apart from the last electric Fortwo more than the styling. The ECA platform gets a claimed 35.7 kWh battery and a target range of around 300 km on the WLTP cycle. The previous Smart EQ Fortwo managed roughly 125–135 km, so the new generation’s estimated range is more than double. Smart notes that European certification isn’t finished yet and the final figures could still change.
DC fast charging from 10 to 80% should take less than 20 minutes. For a city car that matters more than a high peak charging rate: a short stop should be enough to top up most of the battery, whereas the old Fortwo relied much more heavily on home or slow public charging.
Smart didn’t want to sacrifice manoeuvrability for the bigger battery: the claimed turning circle is 6.95 metres, exactly the same as the two-seat Smart’s previous generation. The concept measured 2,792 mm long, and the wheels are again pushed out to the corners to preserve cabin space and make parking easier.
Even so, the Smart #2 stays strictly two-seat. That puts it up against compact EVs like the Renault Twingo E-Tech and the Leapmotor T03, but also against used Fortwo models, which have the edge in size while trailing badly on range. Buyers will have to choose between the shortest possible body and a proper second row. Price will play its part in that choice too.
According to Spanish media, the car could be priced at around €20,000. That’s only a preliminary estimate: Smart hasn’t published a price list yet and hasn’t confirmed the production model’s starting cost.
Design is handled by Mercedes-Benz, while the technical side comes from the Mercedes-Benz and Geely joint venture. Production will be organised in China, after which the Smart #2 will reach Europe and select other markets. The full production version will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026 — that’s when Smart is expected to reveal motor output, exact dimensions, equipment and the final range.
