Chevrolet Sonic: GM Plans a More Affordable Trim for Its New Crossover

General Motors will expand the Chevrolet Sonic lineup in the coming months. The new compact crossover is currently sold only in the pricier Premier and RS trims, so a more affordable version looks like the next logical step. The name, equipment and price of that version have not been revealed yet.

In Brazil, the Sonic Premier starts at 129,990 reais, while the RS starts at 135,990 reais — roughly $23,700 and $24,800 at current exchange rates. Interestingly, Chevrolet's own website lists the larger Tracker starting at 119,990 reais — about 10,000 reais cheaper than the entry-level Sonic.

Promotional terms may vary, but the price gap explains why the model needs a base trim. Both current versions come with a turbocharged three-cylinder 1.0-liter engine with direct injection and a six-speed automatic. The engine produces 115 hp, with torque reaching 180 Nm on gasoline and 185 Nm on ethanol. The car measures 4,228 mm in length, with a 392-liter trunk.

Premier and RS already come with six airbags, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, 8- and 11-inch screens, and 17-inch wheels. The RS mainly stands out with sportier styling and extra parking features. Cutting the price will likely mean trimming some of this equipment, but GM hasn't announced any such decisions yet.

Brazilian media have also reported on a future hybrid version of the Sonic. GM is indeed preparing hybrid models for the region, but the specs and timing of an electrified Sonic haven't been officially confirmed. For now, only the gasoline-and-ethanol engine is listed in the catalog.

At the same time, Chevrolet intends to bring the Sonic to new markets across South America. The crossover is built at the plant in Gravataí, Brazil, and expanded exports were part of the plan even before sales began.
