Camouflaged prototypes of the next-gen Ford Mustang GT500 hit Detroit with bigger brakes, aero, and Cup 2R tires, hinting at a potent V8 and track tuning.
Ford is pressing ahead with testing of the next-generation Mustang in its most potent guise yet. Several camouflaged prototypes, believed to preview the future GT500, have been spotted around Detroit, and despite the heavy disguise, a number of technical details are already plain to see.
The car wears larger air intakes, a reworked front bumper, and vertically stacked square exhaust finishers. Test cars roll on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and Pilot Cup 2R tires—305/30ZR20 up front and 315/30ZR20 at the rear—an unambiguous nod to serious grip. Based on the photos, the brake rotors are bigger than those on the current Dark Horse, underscoring performance intent. In the cabin of one prototype, a sizeable rear wing was visible, a piece that likely points to track-oriented configurations. The mix of tire compounds and that prominent aero suggest Ford is validating the car across both street and circuit use, and the stance alone makes its ambitions clear.
Early indications are that Ford may deploy an updated version of the Predator V8 or consider a different powerplant altogether. A significant jump in output is expected, positioning the car as a credible rival to 2026 sports machines. As for timing, Ford isn’t saying when the wraps will officially come off.
