Karmann Dexter 555: A Compact Family Camper With Four Real Beds

The Karmann Dexter 555 is priced from €72,400, roughly 6.51 million rubles at the Bank of Russia's rate for 18 July. For that money, buyers get a family camper van with four fixed sleeping places in a body just 5.99 metres long. But the number of beds isn't the deciding factor here — payload is. The permitted maximum weight is capped at 3.5 tonnes, and Karmann hasn't yet revealed the van's unladen weight.

The base vehicle is a Fiat Ducato with a 140 hp diesel engine. The van is about 2.08 metres wide and 2.89 metres tall. Four belted seats come as standard, with a fifth available as an option. But having an extra seat doesn't automatically mean the camper can carry five passengers, a full water supply, bikes and luggage without exceeding its limits.

Above the front living area sits an electric double bed that lowers at the push of a button. At the rear is a transverse bed measuring 184 by 130/124 cm. The lounge can also convert into a fifth bed, 178 cm long, better suited to a child or a shorter adult. That makes the Dexter more convenient than many campers where the main bed has to be made up fresh every night.

Equipment includes a 120Ah lithium battery, a diesel heater, a 113-litre fridge, Isofix mounts and a heated waste-water tank. Fresh and waste water tanks each hold 100 litres. For off-grid stays, Karmann offers a package with a second battery and a 200W solar panel.

The trade-off shows up in the tall body. Headroom in the kitchen and rear areas reaches about 2.10 metres, but drops to roughly 1.89 metres under the lifting bed mechanism. In the top bed itself, clearance is just 52 cm, so it suits children better than tall adults. The van's height also rules out most standard garages and calls for extra care around parking structures and low entrances.

For a Russian buyer, the 6.51 million ruble conversion only reflects the European base price. Shipping, customs clearance, the recycling fee, certification and extra equipment will push the final cost higher. It's also worth asking in advance who would service the lifting-bed mechanism, the heater, the fridge and the rest of the living module — a regular Fiat Ducato service centre won't necessarily cover the specialised camper conversion.

Before ordering a Dexter 555, it's worth requesting the exact weight of the chosen configuration and calculating the remaining payload with passengers, full tanks and luggage included. For a family camper, that number matters more than a fifth seat, a solar panel or the total count of advertised sleeping places.
