Subaru Levorg Hybrid Is Getting Closer: Why It Pays to Watch the Layback First
A. Krivonosov
Subaru added its S hybrid system to the Levorg Layback, but the regular Levorg is still waiting. Here's what a hybrid Levorg could mean for buyers.
The current-generation Subaru Levorg arrived back in 2020 and has been through several rounds of updates since. So the real question for Japanese buyers is simple: buy the mature wagon now, or wait for the next generation with the S hybrid system.
The current Levorg still has a strong base. The 1.8-liter turbo engine delivers smooth power and plenty of everyday drivability, while the STI Sport R EX version with its 2.4-liter turbo makes 275 hp. A wagon like this remains a rare format — not a crossover, not a sedan, but a fast, practical car built for the highway.
Subaru also keeps an important ace up its sleeve: EyeSight X, which makes long highway drives noticeably easier. But there's a clear reason to wait for the next Levorg. Subaru has already added the S system to the related Levorg Layback, while the regular Levorg still hadn't received it as of July 11, 2026.
There's no official announcement of the next generation yet, but a strong hybrid looks like the most logical technical upgrade for the model switch. Bringing S to the Levorg should make the wagon more efficient and quieter around town: the electric motor can smooth out launches, sharpen low-speed response, and cut fuel consumption without losing Subaru's signature character. For drivers, that matters more than the buzzword “electrification” — less fuel burned in traffic, calmer acceleration, and less noise where the turbo engine currently has to work harder.
Cabin changes are expected too. Japanese outlets report a possible 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a sharper 11.6-inch vertical display, and new AI-powered voice features. Outside, the next Levorg is tipped to get slimmer LED headlights and a wider front end in line with Subaru's latest design language.
The choice comes down to what you need. If you need a car now and value handling, highway comfort, and proven engineering above all else, the current Levorg remains a strong pick. But if fuel economy, hybrid power, new driver-assist features, and a fresher interior matter most, it's worth waiting for news on the next generation.
The Levorg is at a crossroads right now: the current model is already mature, but the next one could be the wagon's first real step toward full Subaru hybridization.
32CARS.RU previously reported that Subaru's electric models will come with a 10-year warranty.
