Peugeot E-208 (2027): electric supermini promises 400 km and a price under the current car

The third-generation 208 goes electric, stays built in Spain and aims to undercut today's E-208. A 48 kWh LFP battery, around 400 km WLTP and steer-by-wire are on the table.

Peugeot won't reveal the new 208 at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, even though that's where the brand will hint at its future design. What matters more to buyers: the third-generation 208 goes fully electric, stays on the Spanish production line and should cost less than today's E-208.

According to Peugeot CEO Alain Favey, the launch has slipped to the second half of 2027. The car will ride on the STLA One platform, with production staying at the Figueruelas plant near Zaragoza, which will also build the new Opel Corsa and DS N°3. CATL is putting up a battery plant next door, so the entry-level E-208 should get a 48 kWh LFP battery and around 400 km of WLTP range. A pricier version will manage up to 500 km, though it's still unclear whether it will use a large LFP pack or denser NCM chemistry.

The price is expected to land around €25,000 before incentives. In Europe that puts it in a straight fight with the Renault 5 and the upcoming Volkswagen ID. Polo. Peugeot isn't betting on retro charm but on calmer practicality: Spanish manufacturing, a familiar B-segment format and a battery engineered to bring costs down.

There's a divisive bit of tech, too: the new 208 could be the first compact B-segment hatchback with steer-by-wire, with no mechanical link at all. It helps packaging and agility, but on a mass-market car the technology will have to earn trust — especially once the warranty runs out.

As a market yardstick it matters: Chinese EVs will have to compete not only on range, but also on the price of a new generation of European models.

Peugeot isn't building a toy for EV enthusiasts but an attempt to bring the affordable B-segment back in an era of expensive batteries.
