Land Rover Defender 2028: the facelift hides more than a fresh bumper

Land Rover Defender 2028: facelift hides more than a new bumper landrover.com

Land Rover is preparing the Defender mid-cycle refresh. New front and rear styling, refined chassis and updated engines for Euro 7 are on the way.

Land Rover is pressing on with the Defender mid-cycle refresh. According to Motor.es, prototypes of the Defender Facelift 2028 are already running hot test cycles and are still partly hidden under camouflage. An earlier test mule was spotted at the Nürburgring, most likely fine-tuning the chassis.

Exterior changes will be most obvious up front. Expect new grilles, a redesigned front bumper, reworked lower air intakes and LED fog lights. The round headlight signature stays so the Defender keeps its trademark face. The rear bumper will be reshaped too, and the reverse lights are set to move higher.

The bigger story is hidden underneath. Land Rover needs to fix the weak spots flagged by customers and service centres: chassis tuning, steering, brakes and suspension. The cabin won’t see a major overhaul, but expect upgraded materials, new trim options and more lavish front seats. The Defender 130 may also gain individual third-row chairs in place of the current bench.

The engine line-up needs work too, thanks to Euro 7. The four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel units will have to be brought in line with the new rules, while the PHEV versions could pick up more electric-only range.
