BMW 3 Series vs Audi A4 2018: which German sedan holds up better on the used market

BMW 3 Series vs Audi A4 2018: which used sedan is more reliable A. Krivonosov

BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 from 2018 compared on the used market. Audi looks slightly calmer for long ownership, but neither sedan is cheap to keep.

Experts have compared the reliability of two popular 2018 German sedans — BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. The conclusion is cautious: Audi looks slightly calmer for long-term ownership, but neither car can be called cheap or trouble-free on the used market.

The BMW 3 Series 2018 earns an average reliability score of 65 out of 100. Annual repair and maintenance costs come to roughly $773, or about €720. Common complaints include electronic glitches, engine issues and fuel system problems. For BMW that is hardly a surprise: people buy the 3 Series for the way it drives, not for low running costs.

The Audi A4 2018 takes a small lead. The front-wheel-drive version scores 3.5 out of 5, and average annual costs sit at around $739, or roughly €690. The all-wheel-drive A4 Quattro looks worse: thanks to a more complex driveline, costs climb to about $925 a year, or around €860. The main complaints concern the electrics, the MMI infotainment and quirks of the transmission.

Recall history tells a similar story. The 2018 BMW 3 Series had several recalls, including a serious one on the 328d diesel involving an EGR cooler with a fire risk. The 2018 Audi A4 had fewer recalls, mostly tied to safety systems and electrics — in particular the passenger seat occupancy sensor and heating elements.

At inspection, the BMW deserves a careful look at oil leaks, the turbo, cooling, the fuel system and the full service history. On the Audi the priorities are the gearbox, electrics, MMI, the all-wheel-drive system and the suspension. By 100–150 thousand kilometres both cars are ready to demand expensive work.

For a calmer ownership experience, the front-wheel-drive Audi A4 is the more rational pick. If the driving feel of a classic BMW 3 Series matters more, it is the more interesting choice — just budget for the maintenance in advance.
