Hyundai France: i20 hatchbacks and Ioniq Electric called back over brakes and battery

Two recall campaigns affect over 10,000 vehicles: i20 hatchbacks face a brake vacuum hose issue, while Ioniq Electric needs a BMS software update.

Hyundai has launched two recall campaigns in France, targeting the previous-generation petrol i20 and the electric Ioniq Electric. Combined, more than 10,000 cars are affected, and owners will need to book a visit to an authorised dealer.

The larger campaign covers the Hyundai i20 fitted with the three-cylinder turbocharged 1.0 T-GDi petrol engine. It involves cars built between 18 August 2015 and 21 September 2020 — around 8,800 units in France. The fault lies with a vacuum hose in the braking system: if it’s routed incorrectly, the hose comes under extra stress, starts to vibrate and may eventually crack. The result is reduced braking performance. Repairs are free of charge.

The second campaign concerns the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, produced between 18 June 2019 and 26 July 2022. Around 1,500 cars are affected in France. The problem lies in the battery management system (BMS) software: it may detect thermal instability in the battery too late and fail to warn the driver of a potential fire risk.

The fix on the Ioniq Electric is simpler — a BMS reflash that takes less than 20 minutes. Even so, a service visit is unavoidable: the model is too old to handle a full over-the-air update.
