The updated Chevrolet Montana 2027 gains power and comfort features in South America, but Chevy still refuses to send the compact pickup to the U.S. market.
Chevrolet has updated its compact Montana pickup for South America. The 2027 model year brings a power bump and more comfort kit, but the truck still isn’t coming to the United States. That’s why the Western press once again calls the Montana a “forbidden fruit” for American buyers.
What makes the Montana interesting is that it pushes against the usual image of a Chevrolet pickup. It isn’t a body-on-frame Silverado or a midsize Colorado, but a compact front-wheel-drive truck with a unibody construction. The third generation debuted in Brazil in late 2022, is built in São Caetano do Sul, and rides on GM’s global GEM platform. Power comes from a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo, familiar from the Tracker.
For Latin America, the formula makes sense. Buyers don’t need a huge truck — they want an affordable vehicle for the city, small businesses, family duties, and light hauling. With four doors, compact dimensions, and an open cargo bed, the Montana is closer to a practical crossover with a bed than to a traditional heavy-duty pickup.
In the United States, that niche has already been filled by the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, yet Chevrolet still won’t bring the Montana to the market. It stands out because GM’s U.S. lineup has a clear gap between affordable crossovers and full-size trucks. The Montana could be that more affordable alternative — but there is still no official word on a U.S. launch.
