Rivian R3X: CEO Confirms Long Wait, But the Rally Crossover Is Coming

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe says the R3X is still a couple of years away. The rally-flavored compact EV will follow the R2, not the R3.
The Rivian R3X turned out to be the model fans loved almost more than the already-launched R2. Buying one quickly, however, won’t be an option. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has confirmed that the R3X is at least a couple of years away, and the company isn’t ready to share a precise public timeline.
The R3X was unveiled back in March 2024 alongside the R2 and the calmer R3. Unlike the larger R1S SUV and the R1T pickup, it’s a compact electric crossover with the spirit of a retro hot hatch crossed with a rally car. The R3X wears wider wheels and tires, has a sportier driving position, bold body details and an interior Rivian itself described as “rugged yet playful.”
Production specs aren’t official yet. The R3X is expected to pack a performance powertrain, hit 60 mph in roughly 3 seconds and offer a range of over 300 miles. Still, these are expectations and early targets rather than final figures.
The launch order matters, too. Right now Rivian’s main bet is the R2, a more affordable SUV meant to broaden the brand’s audience. Next in line is the R3X, while the more laid-back R3 will follow it and should undercut the R2 on price. For a young automaker the logic is clear: a mass-market product first, emotional variants for enthusiasts later.
