Volvo EX40 Cargo: electric crossover gets a cargo bay instead of rear seats

Volvo EX40 Cargo: electric crossover turned into a commercial vehicle volvocars.com

Volvo Car Nederland is converting the EX40 into a Cargo version with no rear bench and a flat load floor. Conversion starts at €2,095 excluding VAT.

Volvo has expanded its EX40 line-up with a new Cargo version. This isn’t a standalone van but a conversion of the electric crossover: the rear bench is removed, a flat load floor is installed, and the rear side windows are blanked out. The setup is aimed at entrepreneurs and small businesses for whom a full-size electric van is overkill, yet who still need a compact vehicle for city use and zero-emission zones.

In the Netherlands, converting a standard EX40 into an EX40 Cargo costs a minimum of €2,095 excluding VAT. The variant with a partition grille between the front seats and the cargo bay is priced at €2,995 excluding VAT — meaning the grille adds exactly €900 to the bill. Volvo has also added safety nets, lashing eyes, cargo rails, and bespoke storage systems to the options list. A key detail: the EX40 Cargo can easily be converted back into a regular passenger EX40 simply by reinstalling the rear bench.

The technical side remains standard. In the Netherlands, the entry-level EX40 Single Motor Essential starts at €42,995, delivers 238 hp, and uses a 67 kWh net battery for a WLTP range of up to 477 km. The Single Motor Extended Range is markedly more compelling on paper: 252 hp, a 79 kWh battery, and up to 575 km of range. At the top of the line-up sits the Twin Motor with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive.
