MINI Countryman EV in Japan: smarter electronics push range to 520 km without a bigger battery

MINI Countryman EV: Japan Update Adds Range Without a Bigger Battery D.Novikov / 32CARS

MINI has updated the electric Countryman for Japan with a new SiC inverter and revised front-axle bearings. Range climbs to 520 km for the E and 495 km for the SE ALL4.

MINI has updated the electric Countryman in Japan without a loud facelift, but with a meaningful technical change. The Countryman E now travels up to 520 km on a single charge, while the all-wheel-drive SE ALL4 reaches up to 495 km.

The headline upgrade is the new SiC inverter. It converts energy from the high-voltage battery to the electric motor more efficiently and cuts losses in the part of the powertrain that usually stays out of sight but has a real effect on total range. MINI also reworked the front-axle bearings to reduce friction and revised tyre pressures. Together, these changes deliver extra range without fitting a larger battery.

For buyers, this kind of upgrade is more useful than a cosmetic trim pack. The car needs to plug in less often, feels more relaxed on the motorway and is less dependent on ideal conditions. It is especially noticeable on the Countryman SE ALL4: all-wheel drive usually eats into efficiency, so 495 km is a strong figure for a family crossover.

Prices in Japan start at 6.04 million yen, which translates to roughly $38,400 at current rates. MINI has not made the Countryman a cheap EV, but it has shown that range can grow not only through bigger batteries, but also through careful work on energy losses. Sometimes the most important kilometres come not from the cells, but from what sits between them and the wheels.
