BMW and Mistral AI partner to use AI for crash simulations. They will train specialized AI models on petabytes of data to improve safety and speed up analysis.
BMW Group has teamed up with French AI company Mistral AI to work on industrial artificial intelligence. Their first joint project focuses on crash simulations—the carmaker aims to use AI to analyze complex engineering data more quickly and precisely.
According to BMW, the company runs thousands of virtual crash tests every week. Over the years, these simulations have generated an archive exceeding one petabyte. This dataset contains information on body structures, materials, and how they react in different impact scenarios. The plan is to use this archive to train specialized AI models.
BMW stresses that this isn't about a general-purpose chatbot. Instead, they're developing what they call large industrial models. These systems are trained on industry-specific data and are designed to understand the full context of automotive engineering, from simulations to safety requirements. The goal is to help engineers spot patterns faster and assess design alternatives with greater accuracy.
For the average driver, the impact won't be immediate, but it will come through future vehicle models. The faster a manufacturer can analyze crash behavior, the sooner it can identify weak points and refine the design.
