Consumer Reports Advises Avoiding the 2026 Ford Explorer

2026 Ford Explorer gets 'avoid' rating from Consumer Reports ford.com

Consumer Reports advises avoiding the 2026 Ford Explorer due to low reliability and ride issues. The Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid is a better pick.

Consumer Reports has named the 2026 Ford Explorer a vehicle to avoid. The rating is tied to predicted reliability, with the Explorer scoring just 30 out of 100.

Interestingly, not everything about the Explorer drew criticism. It performed well in road tests, and owner satisfaction was solid. Testers praised its power, precise handling, and quiet, spacious cabin.

But the shortcomings outweighed the positives. Consumer Reports took issue with the base four-cylinder engine’s coarse operation, the 10-speed automatic’s harsh shifts, and the suspension’s lack of comfort. Combined with the low reliability forecast, that was enough to land the SUV on the “avoid” list.

As an alternative, the organization recommends the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid. It costs more but delivers better fuel economy, ample power, a roomier third row, more cargo space, a compliant suspension, and confident handling.
