Chevrolet Camaro Returns: Production Approved for 2028

Chevrolet Camaro comeback greenlit: production set for 2028? chevrolet.com

General Motors has greenlit a new Chevrolet Camaro, likely on Alpha 2 platform. Production expected in late 2027 as 2028 model. A return after 2023 pause, with NASCAR implications.

The Chevrolet Camaro could make a comeback after its production pause that began in December 2023 when the sixth generation ended. Foreign media report that GM has greenlit a new Camaro, likely riding on the rear-wheel-drive Alpha 2 platform.

Production might start in late 2027 at the GM Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan, where the Camaro was previously built. That would position it as a 2028 model. The plant currently assembles the Cadillac CT4 and CT5, but with the CT4's discontinuation, space for new projects opens up.

The intrigue extends beyond regular buyers to NASCAR. The racing Camaro ZL1 has been used in the Cup Series since 2018, but rules allow updates only within three years after the production model ceases. So a new Camaro could give GM a fresh foundation for its racing program.

Chevrolet hasn't made an official announcement yet, and the images seen are just renderings from independent designers. For Russia, the direct market angle is absent—this is about the US, NASCAR, and GM's future lineup. But the news is important for fans of American sports cars: after the Corvette's price increases and the Mustang's continued presence, the Camaro again has market rationale.
