Horse Powertrain’s X-Range C15 Hybrid Module Converts BEVs to Hybrids
Horse Powertrain, a Renault-Geely joint venture, introduces the X-Range C15 Direct Drive module to hybridize EV platforms, enabling quick production of HEVs, PHEVs, and REEVs.
Horse Powertrain, the joint venture between Renault and Geely, is working on the X-Range C15 Direct Drive module designed to hybridize EV platforms. The updated system is meant to be a nearly ready-to-use solution for automakers looking to quickly add hybrids to their lineups.
At its core is a compact all-in-one module. It packages a 1.5-liter engine, hybrid transmission, electric motors, and power electronics into a single unit. This block can replace the rear electric drive on an existing BEV platform, effectively turning it into a base for HEV, PHEV, or REEV vehicles without major changes to the car or production line.
For car manufacturers, this is a way to cut costs and respond more quickly to market demand. If consumers aren't ready to fully embrace pure EVs, a single platform can support multiple powertrain types. According to Horse, the system supports front- and all-wheel drive, an 800-volt architecture, and electric drive power over 200 kW.
The concept is particularly relevant for the global market, as hybrids once again serve as a bridge between internal combustion engines and EVs. The real question is which brands will be the first to put this module into production.
