BMW and SOLARWATT bring Vehicle-to-Home to Neue Klasse EVs
BMW's Neue Klasse EVs (iX3, i3) will double as home batteries with SOLARWATT V2H technology. Store solar energy, save on electricity costs. Launching in 2026.
BMW is turning its Neue Klasse electric cars into an integral part of the home energy system. Together with SOLARWATT, the company is preparing Vehicle-to-Home integration for the new BMW iX3 and BMW i3. These cars won’t just charge at home—they’ll also be able to feed energy back into the home’s electrical system through the bidirectional BMW Wallbox Professional.
The concept is simple: the EV becomes an extra battery for the house. If the owner has solar panels, excess energy can be stored not only in a stationary battery but also in the car’s pack. That stored energy can then be used in the evening, at night, or during peak-rate periods when grid electricity is more expensive.
At the center of the system is the SOLARWATT Manager home energy management unit. It coordinates solar panels, home storage, household appliances, charging, and the car itself. Users control everything via the My BMW App and the SOLARWATT Home app.
The system can factor in dynamic electricity tariffs and solar generation forecasts. That’s not just a neat technical feature—it’s about saving money. The car charges when energy is cheap or when solar production creates a surplus, and it discharges back to the home when that makes financial sense.
The V2H integration is scheduled to launch in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands by the end of 2026. BMW and SOLARWATT have been working together on EV-related projects since 2013, and since 2021 they’ve been developing home storage solutions using components derived from BMW’s battery technology.
For anyone considering an iX3 or i3, this could be one of the most practical arguments for going electric. The car sits idle most of the time anyway; with V2H, it becomes a massive battery on wheels. The real questions will be the cost of the hardware, the electricity tariffs, and how seamlessly the system works in a real home—not just on a show floor.
