The 2026 Ford Maverick achieves IIHS Top Safety Pick with good ratings in key crash tests, though its moderate overlap score is marginal and standard headlights acceptable. Read more.

The 2026 Ford Maverick has been awarded the Top Safety Pick by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The compact pickup earned the highest rating of “good” in the small overlap front crash test and the updated side crash test, as well as for its optional headlights and pedestrian collision prevention system.

But the result isn’t perfect. The Maverick’s standard headlights received a rating of “acceptable,” as did its front collision prevention system with other vehicles. The weakest point was the updated moderate overlap front crash test, where the pickup earned a rating of “marginal.” That’s why it earned the Top Safety Pick award rather than the higher Top Safety Pick+.

IIHS criteria became stricter in 2026. Now, to qualify for the basic Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle needs a “good” rating in the updated moderate overlap front crash test, whereas previously an “acceptable” rating was sufficient. Additionally, collision prevention systems must be standard equipment, and all trim levels must have headlights rated at least “acceptable.”

For buyers, the main takeaway is straightforward: the Maverick remains reasonably safe by IIHS standards, but when choosing a trim, it’s worth paying attention to headlights and electronic assists. It is especially important that some of the best ratings come from optional equipment.
