Toyota launched the new Land Cruiser FJ in Japan: a compact off-road SUV with 2.7L engine, 4WD, and safety tech. Priced at ~€24,330.

Toyota has launched the new Land Cruiser FJ in Japan — a more compact and affordable variant of the legendary lineup. Now joining the 300, 70, and 250 series, this model aims to deliver the genuine Land Cruiser experience without the bulk, making it more city-friendly for daily driving.

Built on a ladder-frame platform with a shorter wheelbase, the FJ measures 4575 mm long, 1855 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2580 mm. That's 350 mm shorter, 125 mm narrower, and 270 mm less in wheelbase than the Land Cruiser 250. Its 5.5-meter turning radius is a strong selling point for an SUV of this type, especially in tight urban spaces.

Power comes from a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder (2TR-FE) producing 163 hp and 246 Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic (6 Super ECT) and part-time four-wheel drive. WLTC fuel economy is rated at 8.7 km/l, or about 11.5 l/100 km. It's not a hybrid, but the straightforward setup appeals to buyers who prioritize simplicity over flashy screens.

Off-road credentials are serious: ground clearance and approach/departure angles match the 250 series, while suspension articulation is on par with the Land Cruiser 70. Features include downhill assist, hill-start assist, and an electric rear locker. The suspension uses double wishbones up front and a rigid rear axle with four links and a Panhard rod.

The five-seat cabin features a 60:40 split folding rear seat that slides and reclines. Cargo capacity is 795 liters with the seats up and 1607 liters with them folded. Standard equipment includes Toyota Safety Sense, a 360-degree camera system, blind-spot monitoring, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen.

In Japan, the Land Cruiser FJ is offered in VX trim for 4,500,100 yen (around €24,330). Toyota expects monthly sales of about 1,300 units. Production takes place at Toyota Motor Thailand's plant in Banpho.

An interesting side note: Toyota is also developing a folding electric vehicle called the Land Hopper that can be stowed in the FJ's trunk. Set to arrive in spring 2027, it's designed for terrain the Land Cruiser can't access. This sums up the FJ's philosophy: less formality, more adventure.
