Volkswagen has delayed the launch of the electric Golf until the end of the decade. According to Autocar, brand CEO Thomas Schäfer confirmed at the FT Future of the Car summit in London that the company “doesn’t need an electric Golf in 2028” because the current lineup already covers the brand’s main needs.

The model, which was expected to be called ID. Golf, was previously slated for 2028. Now Volkswagen will prioritize other electric vehicles. The upcoming range includes the ID. Polo, an updated ID.3 Neo, and the ID. Cross. The decision appears tactical: if the electric Golf arrives too early, it could draw attention away from the new ID family models.

There’s also a technical reason. The electric Golf is meant to switch to the SSP platform, Volkswagen Group’s new architecture for the next generation of cars. It features an 800-volt electrical system, more advanced batteries, and software developed together with Rivian. But SSP has already faced delays, with the first models based on it now expected no earlier than 2028. Moreover, Audi and Porsche will get it first, while Volkswagen will join later.

For owners and buyers of European cars, the overall trend matters. Even major brands are now in no rush to replace their most recognizable models with electric versions until the platform, price, and demand are ready. The gasoline Golf isn’t disappearing overnight: after its facelift, production will move to Mexico, while the electric version is planned for Wolfsburg. The main question is no longer whether the Golf will be electric, but when Volkswagen can make it mass-market and profitable.
