The 2,200-hp Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 sets a new quarter-mile record of 6.87 seconds, becoming the fastest EV and first electric car under 7 seconds.

The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 has become the fastest electric vehicle on the planet, setting a new quarter-mile record. The 2,200-hp dragster covered the distance in just 6.87 seconds, beating the company's previous best and outpacing hypercars like the Rimac and Lotus.

This is the third generation of the electric Cobra Jet, following the 1400 and 1800 versions, but the new model isn't just an evolution—it's a fully redesigned project. Ford Racing engineers started from scratch, focusing on power delivery efficiency rather than just raw numbers.

The powertrain includes two electric motors—one per axle—with a combined output of 2,200 hp. For the first time, a two-speed transmission with a centrifugal clutch is used, which significantly improves traction control off the line. According to Ford, the gearbox provides over a second of improvement compared to a conventional single-speed setup.

Weight reduction was a major priority: the car is about 500 kg lighter than its predecessor, tipping the scales at around 1,500 kg. Energy comes from a 32-kWh battery pack that can be fast-charged in 20 minutes—a crucial feature for drag racing.

The trap speed at the finish line was 357 km/h, and the Cobra Jet 2200 became the first electric vehicle to break the 7-second barrier in the quarter mile. By comparison, the previous Cobra Jet 1800 ran 7.62 seconds.

This project highlights a new reality: electric cars are no longer just catching up to gasoline-powered sports cars—they're starting to set the rules in the most extreme disciplines.
