The Volkswagen ID.3 has surpassed the Tesla Model Y to become the most common EV on German roads, with over 116,000 registrations, signaling a market shift.
The German electric vehicle market has hit a major turning point. As of early 2026, the Volkswagen ID.3 has become the most common EV on German roads, with over 116,000 registered units according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). The German hatchback has now overtaken the Tesla Model Y, which previously held the top spot.
Tesla's crossover currently has around 106,000 registered vehicles. Just a year ago, the situation was reversed, highlighting rapid shifts in the market. Both models are the first EVs in Germany to surpass the 100,000-registration mark.
The Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 family is also closing in on that figure soon. Despite Volkswagen's success, EVs overall still trail traditional models.
Germany has roughly two million registered EVs, while the Volkswagen Golf alone accounts for over three million units. Still, the changing of the guard signals that European manufacturers are gradually strengthening their position and beginning to reclaim market share from Tesla.
The ID.3's victory is more than just a statistic—it's a sign of a market shift. Local brands have adapted and started to compete effectively with Tesla, even in the mass-market EV segment.
