Kia EV3 Gets All-Wheel Drive, Lower Prices to Take on Chinese Rivals

Kia updates the EV3 with a new AWD variant, 265 hp, 572 km range, and price cuts to narrow the gap with Chinese brands like BYD in Europe.

Kia is strengthening its position in the European electric vehicle market with an update of its compact crossover, the EV3, while simultaneously reducing prices across the lineup. This move aims to counter fast-growing pressure from Chinese brands in the region.

The updated EV3 now features an all-wheel-drive version producing 265 hp, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and towing up to 1.5 tons. This variant is exclusively paired with a 81.4 kWh battery, offering a WLTP range of up to 572 km. The base models still boast a maximum range of 605 km.

Among the technical upgrades is a new 22-kW onboard charger that cuts full charging time to under four hours. Practicality improvements include reclining rear seats, more powerful USB-C ports, and dual wireless charging for smartphones.

But the key change is pricing strategy. According to Kia’s CEO, the price gap between Kia models and Chinese rivals in Europe has been narrowed from 20–25% to 15–20%. This effectively means going toe-to-toe in price with competitors like the BYD Atto 3.

The rise of Chinese brands is forcing manufacturers to rethink their strategies. Despite lower margins, Kia is betting on increasing market share, leveraging its financial stability to hold onto its current position. The company expects the Chinese auto industry to face consolidation in the coming years, which will slow its expansion pace.
